Feeling Lost Still After Seven Years

Posted by EpikHellSword - June 27th, 2026

So as you know if you have been paying attention to my dramatic ass for the past seven or so years. I have been looking for a job.

This was previously exclusively in the summer since I ultimately went to community college, however I quit it in January 2026 in hopes to join the military.

Buuut health stuff happened, and I am likely to be unfortunately disqualified at worst, and at best, I am on hiatus for months on end. due to immediate issues,

So finally in my mid 20s: I am back to square one. I am not looking for money. I am looking for a way to achieve independence.

I have vision issues such as double vision, myopia, nystagmus, etc. which disqualifies me from a lot of jobs apparently.

My home life isn't too great. Let's just leave it at that.

Since I attended community college, I have gained a fair amount of people skills due to my major. However that somehow didn't land even land me in the front door of anywhere. I took a career and life planning class, applied those concepts and at best got hit with "You're overqualified." and at worst "You're underqualified."

Oh, and if you are wondering about jobs I tried with my major, I did indeed find one. It's a social science. I learned many group dynamics and stuff. I retained the skills too as I use it everyday. Basically, I am very patient with people and face to face communication.

On the other hand though, the field I was going to be in is demanding and quite frankly: confusing. Not to mention the worst for your mental health and it has a timeline which you gotta follow.

Given how slow I am at progressing, I decided that field isn't happening for me despite how naturally gifted I am.

So that's just perfect.

I am in the US. At this point, I am feeling kinda hopeless not gonna lie. I know it's not the best strategy. That would probably be networking-which I don't have.

I tried actively searching, reaching out with emails and phone calls, literally walking in and asking about a job, researching the companies, doing all that stuff. And yet...I have a 100% failure rate.

Some crazy stuff right there.

So any practical advice for getting a job?

See if there are any non-profits in the area that will help with the job search.

Fuck man, search locally or regionally. There should be something.
Youre gonna have to go through hell though and ya aint gonna have a choice in whats available to you, picked the worst time to be looking for Jobs given how everything is in flux nowadays but they are still there.
Only thing is ya might consider them beneath you, and given what you can offer i don't think you have the luxury of turning your nose down on em anymore.
Also keep finding new skills and polishing the existing ones, keep upgrading yourself and see if you can carve out a niche somewhere

I have been searching for literally like...I dunno five, six years?

I guess my location sucks or something. I tried literally *anything* I thought I was qualified for.

I scored one interview in the field I was in but...well, the field has a *ton* of perquisites which kinda expired for me...also I started to dislike the field I was in so...ya know?

I updated my resume a lot and all that, but eventually gave up and looked into other stuff as previously stated.

At this point nothing is beneath me. Hell, I can try to be like...a janitor or something and probably would still find a way to not land the job.

Ya know what? Any ideas for finding new skills? The hobbies I have been doing is making custom maps and writing out stories. Practicing something called structural synthesis.

I could probably put that I have been analyzing historical legends and implementing them into a cohesive narrative? I mean...that's basically what I've been doing for the past 7-8 months.

Actually, I'm looking at the "general" resume I made. It highlights my writing and public speaking skills interestingly enough. I just made it to say "Screw it. Build something."

But looking at it now, I'm seeing a highlight in public speaking and writing. The other resume I made was specific to my major, but that dream is basically gone.

@EpikHellSword Hmmm. I guess you will need to take a chance and look into if you could look for jobs in the next town or see if there is a need or hole in your town that you can fill.

Also my bad and condolences for the earlier assumption mane. Didn't know that about you.
I wouldn't recommend call centres since they are soul-sucking but they are there.
Custom maps? Like what blender? And story-work? What about that?

With you disability or ailments, couldn't you file for assistance from a governing body about it? Like easier time finding jobs or some security? What about Job agencies or freelancing gigs?
Maybe asking your neighbours or relatives if they have something that needs doing? Or if they know somebody?
It feels like Networking is a skill youll need to develop.
Also it is Midnight here so ill have to go sleep soon, hopefully this helps-

The technological skills themselves aren't transferable, but the writing and creative process should probably be.

The custom maps are just a hobby. I have them on Steam, but the game I am referring to is 20 years old at this point, hence why any technological aspects aren't applicable in this day and age. The writing however should still be. I mean, it's blending multiple versions of stories into one cohesive narrative so that should transfer...I hope.

If I knew how to file for assistance that'd be great. I would love to move even a mile away from my house without getting lost...okay maybe a block? Seriously, I freaking suck at mental mapping. And I don't think phones are a good option since I still need to see...even if I can't see much.

Also whilst I am a natural with people...uh, well. They are either "too busy" or straight up not willing to help. Also asking out of the blue is a good way for me to get hurt. Like wouldn't you beat up a random stranger walking toward you supposedly asking for help? Or at least feel uncomfortable and not willing to help?

In my experience that happens often.

Oh well though. Shit happens.

I know a couple years ago someone told me "not to rely on parents" and I'm trying to break out of that. But it's rather difficult. I also know that someone will likely read this and put blame on me, which is fair. However that's not inherently helpful.

One of mt family members said she would "help me next week". But she's older and the generational knowledge of what is considered "appropriate" to do is clearly different from her time. Her advice was basically harassment-which I didn't do anyways.

Do u have any friends who have a job that needs an extra person on staff?
I heard that referrals from those that already work at the company your applying for increase your chances.
Maybe talk with some of the employees before you head into the interview to possibly give you a good word in?
The job market is especially tough right now, no doubt about it. Don't feel too bad but know that your not the only one who is having a hard time finding a job, I'm still having a hard time even getting a job. My last job was a holiday associate seasonal position that didn't even last 2 weeks for the most part after a 3 year long gap of not being able to get a job and now I'm back to no job.

But I've also heard that people doing side hustles like being a door dash/uber eats driver, you can get a cut from doing that if you have a drivers license and are willing to drive the distance.
Instacart is another hustle job thing where you can do the shopping for people at the store then drive to their place to drop off their order. Rover is a dog walking app that you can use to walk dogs nearby for cash. Task Rabbit is one that I just heard about recently where you can clean others houses for cash.
You can also try flipping stuff on ebay or facebook market place. Go to your local thrift store/goodwill and search around for something and eventually you may find something for half or less the price it would usually be online and then you can sell it on ebay.
I know its not a proper full time or part time job but it might be able to help you get some income.

(Updated )

I have no friends. People just kinda...I dunno. Talk to me and go about their day. Typically it's friendly and we easily get along, but no.

I talked to some employees and they basically said "No." as well-from who I have talked to so far.

Also I have never been employed...well, I have, but it was more patronage than anything. The owner *really* wanted to manipulate me and I knew it. I just turned 16 at the time.

Needless to say I was *really* biased against the owner and acted very inappropriate my last day there.

I also tried talking to all the places I previously applied to face to face. In fact I actually prefer it because I am terrible at talking on the phone. At least when it comes to employment.

I can't drive. I have at least three vision issues that bar me from it. And they're incurable.

Rover sounds cool so I'll check it out.

Honestly I do need to get rid of a lot of old clothes, so ebay, goodwill, and a thrift store could be helpful. Thanks for that.

@EpikHellSword
Its allright to rely on your parents. Thats what family does, as long as you pay the bills or help them with paying them, it's no biggie.

But besides that, its still your Life and you shouldn't feel uncomfortable asking, and no i wouldn't beat up a stranger asking for help lol. I wouldn't feel bad either, cuz if its out of my hands its out of my hands, what can ya do?

I understand its a hassle but, yer gonna have to take risks and try out shit that you are not sure about if you want to make it.
You should learn how to file for assistance, either ask a counselor or look for knowledge yourself since i think you are valid for it.

What state are you in anyway? Maybe ask on 4chan and Reddit as well as any other site you think would help, will net you more answers, preferably from the same country as you too, know more about it.
